The metal insignia 2nd model “E” above the knight's arm with sword is a ground-recovered find, with 4 prongs on reverse. Included is a worn single collar tab for officers without emblem, condition 3.
Extremely rare. In over 35 years of business, this is the 1st Estonian collar tab with metal insignia that we have been able to offer!
The 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (Estonian No. 1) was a grenadier division of the Waffen-SS. A large portion of the troops and officers consisted of Estonian volunteers and Estonians conscripted for military service.
From October 1942 to May 1943, the Estonian Legion had already existed, which was converted into the 3rd Estonian SS Volunteer Brigade on May 5, 1943. On May 26, 1944, it received the designation 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (Estonian No. 1). As early as February 1944, the division was deployed at the Narva. During the breakthrough of the Red Army in the Sillamäe sector, the 20th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS was also severely weakened and ultimately destroyed.
On October 6, 1944, the reconstitution took place in Neuhammer, Silesia. Until January 1945, units of the division fought in East Prussia. When the Soviet major offensive began in January 1945, the division was relocated to Silesia, where it was subordinated as a battle group to the 17th Army.
The withdrawal in February 1945 extended into the Striegau area, where parts of the division with the divisional staff were encircled by Soviet forces in the Neustadt O.S. region. SS Volunteer Grenadier Regiment 46 (Estonian No. 2) came to the aid of the encircled troops and fought its way through to free some battle groups and the divisional staff from the pocket. During this action, Division Commander Franz Augsberger was killed. Until the arrival of his successor Berthold Maack, Alfons Rebane temporarily assumed command of the division as acting commander. The battle groups that broke out fought their way through to Bohemia with the loss of all heavy weapons, where they entered Soviet captivity on May 11, 1945, near Mělník, northeast of Prague. Parts of the division succeeded in escaping westward into American captivity.
