The training ship was originally built in 1919 as “Nawitka” in the USA, in 1925 it was acquired by Norddeutscher Lloyd and in 1938 taken over by the Reich Ministry. Primarily used for training civilian maritime personnel, it was also employed for training youth in the Marine-HJ. The training was more demanding than in most other groups of the HJ and included celestial navigation and other maritime subjects.
