Anti-Partisan Badge in Silver

This is a typical production by C.E. Juncker, fine zinc construction, with over 85% of the original silver plating preserved, triple pierced workmanship, semi-hollow reverse, with round non-magnetic pin. Worn piece, condition 2. Rarely found in this quality.

The Anti-Partisan Badge was instituted on January 29, 1944, by Adolf Hitler and was retroactive to January 1, 1943. The award was to be conferred upon leaders, non-commissioned officers, and enlisted men of all units engaged in combat against partisans and was designed in three grades (Bronze, Silver, Gold). Himmler personally reserved the awarding of the Anti-Partisan Badge in Gold. The requirements for the award were:
for the first grade (Bronze) – 20 days of combat
for the second grade (Silver) – 50 days of combat
for the third grade (Gold) – 100 days of combat.
From October 5, 1944, the circle of persons who could receive this decoration was no longer restricted to members of the Wehrmacht, the Waffen-SS, or the Einsatzgruppen of the Security Police and SD, but anyone who had actively participated in the so-called “anti-partisan operations” could receive it.

Pin-on badge, fine zinc, height 36 mm, featuring the divisional insignia “the capercaillie feather” at center, with “England - Holland - Belgium - France” around the perimeter, pin fastener on reverse. Lightly worn, condition 2.

The 97th Jäger Division (97. JD) was a major formation of the German Wehrmacht Army during World War II. The division was established on December 10, 1940 in Military District VII (München) between Murnau and Rosenheim as the 97th Light Infantry Division and was staffed predominantly with combat-experienced soldiers. The divisional headquarters was stationed in Bad Tölz, which is therefore considered the division's home garrison. The capercaillie feather proposed by Major Weyrauther (IIa of the division) was designated as the unit insignia, which led to the later nickname Capercaillie Jäger Division. On July 6, 1942, the 97th Light Infantry Division was redesignated as the 97th Jäger Division.

Sleeve Shield "Balkan 1944 - 1945"

Manufactured in fine zinc, solid construction, slightly convex, dimensions 50 x 65 mm. Light signs of age, condition 2.
This piece originates from the collection of Max Aurich, listed in the catalog and expert opinion by Friedhelm Heyde from 1978, which served as documentation for the estate settlement. The piece is recorded under position 97) together with the 2nd specimen made of fine zinc. The catalog is enclosed in photocopy.
Max Aurich was one of the most renowned collectors of orders and decorations already during World War II.

The Balkan Shield 1944-1945 was planned but never officially instituted. In the reference work by Dr. Klietmann “Deutsche Auszeichnungen” the shield is described on pages 156/57: “Such a shield was neither instituted nor awarded. However, the creation of such a decoration was apparently considered, as the Reich Stage Designer Benno v. Arent completed a drawing for a design of the Balkan Shield on March 7, 1945. It appears that this had been requested by the Führer Headquarters, but the rapidly successive military events prevented further decisions regarding this institution.”
In the reference work by Dr. Klietmann “Auszeichnungen des Deutschen Reiches 1936-1945” the shield is also described, along with the drawing by Reich Stage Designer Benno v. Arent for the shield dated March 7, 1945. He describes 2 presentation samples: “One sample exists in olive-brown toned metal, the other silver-plated...”. In the book itself, however, only a post-war illustration is shown alongside the original drawing.

This specimen is one of the two presentation samples manufactured in March 1945. These two presentation samples are the only known prototypes of the Balkan Shield that were produced before the end of the war.

Arm Shield “Balkan 1944 - 1945”

Construction of embossed copper sheet metal, dimensions 50 x 65 mm. Minor signs of age, condition 2.
This piece originates from the collection of Max Aurich, listed in the catalog and appraisal by Friedhelm Heyde from 1978, which served as documentation for estate settlement. The piece is recorded under position 97) together with the 2nd example made of fine zinc. The catalog is included as photocopy.

Apparently, however, the creation of such a decoration was contemplated, as the Reich Stage Designer Benno v. Arent completed a drawing for a design of the Balkan Shield on March 7, 1945. It appears this had been requested by the Führer Headquarters, but the rapidly successive military events prevented further decisions regarding this institution.”
In the reference work by Dr. Klietmann “Auszeichnungen des Deutschen Reiches 1936-1945” the shield is also described, including the drawing by Reich Stage Designer Benno v. Arent for the shield dated March 7, 1945. He describes 2 prototype samples: “One sample exists in olive-brown toned metal, the other silver-plated...”. In the book itself, however, only a postwar illustration is shown alongside the original drawing.

This example represents one of the two prototype samples manufactured in March 1945. These two prototype samples are the only known prototypes of the Balkan Shield that were produced before the end of the war.

Wehrmacht Cross of the Siberian Cavalry Regiment No. 2

Non-ferrous metal, slightly domed, toned, blue/yellow enameled. Reverse marked with maker “Braca Knaus Zagreb”, with wide pin. Lightly worn piece, extremely rare!

The 2nd Siberian Cossack Cavalry Regiment, under Colonel Freiherr Ernst Gustav von Nolcken, belonged to the 1st Cossack Cavalry Division of the German Wehrmacht and fought primarily in anti-partisan operations in Croatia. At the end of the war in 1945, approximately 35,000 Cossacks fled from Northern Italy to Carinthia and East Tyrol, including combat units and their family members, where they entered British captivity near Lienz. The units of the XV Cossack Cavalry Corps had withdrawn, fighting until after the war's end, into the Völkermarkt area in Carinthia. The capitulation to the British Army did not occur until May 12, 1945. Contrary to British assurances to the Cossacks, they were to be handed over to the Soviet Union in accordance with the Yalta agreements. To escape this fate, numerous Cossacks and their families committed suicide while still in Austria.
