Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini (* July 29, 1883 in Dovia di Predappio, Province of Forlì; † April 28, 1945 in Giulino di Mezzegra, Province of Como) was an Italian politician. He was Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy from 1922 to 1943. As Duce del Fascismo (“Leader of Fascism”) and Capo del Governo (“Head of Government”), from 1925 he stood as dictator at the head of the fascist regime in Italy. In October 1922, King Victor Emmanuel III appointed Mussolini to head a center-right coalition cabinet after the March on Rome. Mussolini's foreign policy aimed at hegemony in the Mediterranean region and in the Balkans. In 1929, Mussolini ended the conflict between the nation-state and the papacy with the Lateran Treaties. From 1938, Mussolini received, alongside King Victor Emmanuel III, the highest military rank in the Royal Italian Army as First Marshal of the Empire (Ital. Primo maresciallo dell'Impero). On June 10, 1940, Mussolini entered World War II on the German side. However, the Italian offensives in the Mediterranean and East Africa failed, as did the attack on Greece. From autumn 1942, the political, social and military crisis of the regime rapidly escalated and undermined Mussolini's personal dictatorship. In July 1943, he was overthrown by opposition fascists and monarchists who wanted to break the alliance with Germany and preempt an anti-fascist mass movement. Freed from captivity, he stood at the head of the German puppet state Repubblica Sociale Italiana until 1945. In the final days of the war in 1945, Mussolini was captured and executed by communist partisans.

The MSVN presentation dagger also represents one of the most significant pieces from the personal possession of the Duce.

MVSN. Already on February 1, 1923, the “Milizia Volontaria pro La Sicurezza Nazionale” (MVSN) was founded, which existed until its dissolution as part of the Italian armistice conditions in 1943. In the Italian Social Republic, it was then transferred into the Guardia Nazionale Repubblicana (GNR).
Nominally, Benito Mussolini was Commander-in-Chief; in reality, however, the Blackshirts were led by the Chief of Staff in the comparable rank of an army general. Particularly in the MVSN, the structure of the historic Roman army was replicated. The designations of ranks and organization were taken from the Roman army.
The MVSN participated in every theater of war of the Italians as volunteer elite units and special commandos.
In 1940, the MVSN provided three divisions with a total of 34,000 men; in 1942, a fourth division was formed, which was assigned to each army division as Gruppo di Assalto.
Later, 41 mobile units were formed, from which the third regiment in Italian army divisions was to emerge. Due to undermanning, lack of equipment and inadequate training, these mobile units suffered heavy losses. The three divisions were completely destroyed in combat in North Africa.

Maximilian Fretter-Pico (born February 6, 1892 in Karlsruhe; died April 4, 1984 in Kreuth am Tegernsee) was a German officer, ultimately General of Artillery in World War II.

Fretter-Pico entered the army as an officer candidate on September 20, 1910. In 1914 he went with his regiment as adjutant into World War I and in January 1915 took command of a balloon defense gun platoon. In 1918 his promotion to captain. After the war transferred to the Reichswehr. In 1932 he was promoted to major and on March 1, 1935 to lieutenant colonel. In October 1935 he was transferred to the Foreign Department in the High Command of the Army and on August 1, 1937 promoted to colonel. In 1940 participation in the Western Campaign. On March 1, 1941 he was promoted to major general. On April 19, 1941 he assumed command of the 97th Light Infantry Division. With this division he fought from the beginning of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union, in the area of Army Group South. During the capture of the industrial city of Stalino on October 16, 1941, he stood in close successful and comradely cooperation with the Italian 63rd CCNN Legion "Tagliamento". The German/Italian units fought closely together until the so-called "Christmas Battle" at the end of 1941. Very likely this sword is a gift in remembrance of the common hard and successful battles. For the successes of the division under his command, Fretter-Pico was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on December 27, 1941 and was subsequently entrusted with command of the XXX Army Corps. On January 15, 1942 he was first promoted to lieutenant general and already on June 1, 1942 promoted to General of Artillery and thus Commanding General of the Corps.
In 1945 in U.S. prisoner of war captivity, from which he was released in mid-1947. Maximilian Fretter-Pico died at the age of 92 on April 4, 1984 in Kreuth am Tegernsee.

Fascist Italy Presentation Dagger of the Fascist Militia M.V.S.N. to General Pistoia, Duke of Savoy, Deluxe Version, 1936

This dagger corresponds to the regulation dagger of the M.V.S.N. (Milizia volontaria per la sicurezza nazionale) in the general officer's pattern, but in a special deluxe execution. Instead of the usual wooden grip scales, the white grip is carved from genuine ivory in one piece, with the fascist lictor's fasces carved into an oval laurel wreath on the obverse. The reverse features the same carved cartouche with the inscription "FERT" of the House of Savoy. The crossguard is blued. The bright steel blade bears on the obverse the presentation engraving: "La Divisione / Camice Nere / '23 Marzo'" (= The Division of the CCNN (Blackshirts) "23rd of March"). On the reverse with engraving: "A.S.A.R. il Duca di Pistoia" (A.S.A.R. = A Sua Altezza Reale = To His Royal Highness). On the blade spine with date "A. XIV. E.F." (Anno XIV Epoca Fascista, the 14th year of the Fascist Era is 1936, counted from the fascist seizure of power in 1922). Blued steel scabbard, the mounts showing lictor's fasces and inscription: "M.V.S.N." in gold. Overall length 33 cm. Only minor wear and age traces, in very good condition.
Extremely rare, certainly a unique piece of the highest craftsmanship quality.

Filiberto di Savoia - Genova, Duke of Pistoia (1895 - 1990). The Duke participated in World War I with the 1st Cavalry Regiment "Nizza" and was involved in several engagements at Monfalcone and on the Isonzo. On November 4, 1918, he was among the first to enter the city of Trient with a squadron of his regiment. After the war, his residence was moved to Bozen to strengthen the feeling of national unity among the population. His military career subsequently alternated between Italy and Italian East Africa: 1929: Promotion to Colonel. 1932-1933: Commander of the 232nd Infantry Regiment. 1933-1934: Commander of the 11th Infantry Brigade. 1934: Promotion to Brigadier General. 1935-1937: Commanding General of the 1st CC.NN. Division "23 Marzo" of the MVSN (in Ethiopia). 1936: Promotion to Major General. 1937-1938: General Commander of the 11th Infantry Division "Brenner". 1938-1939: General Commander of the Alpine Troops. 1940: General Commander of the 7th Army. 1942: Inspector of Mobile Troops.
