An outstanding piece of historical and museum significance!

The sword comes from Marienburg Castle, Sotheby's auction House of Hanover 2005. Attached is the original inventory tag of the castle museum.

After the Congress of Vienna, the Duchy of Brunswick was established in 1814 within the old borders of the Principality of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Duke Karl assumed government in 1823. Karl was the eldest son of Friedrich Wilhelm, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, the “Black Duke”. In 1824/25 the cavalry was strengthened as "Guard Hussars" to four squadrons and the Guard Grenadier Battalion and a Jäger Battalion were created. This magnificent and oversized sword was likely created in this context. The quality and the seal indicate the Duke himself as the bearer of the weapon. In 1830, Karl II was overthrown due to his arbitrary rule.
