Pin-back cross, manufactured by J.C. Gante, Vereinsabzeichenfabrik Gravier-und Emaillieranstalt, Berlin. Reverse with award number 762, “ges. gesch.”. Lightly worn, condition 2.
The highest award number known to us is “960”. Very rare.

The Wehrsportkreuz (Military Sports Cross) was established at the XI. Reichsfrontsoldatentag of the Stahlhelmbund, Bund der Frontsoldaten, on October 4-5, 1930 in Koblenz; the first awards were made in May 1931. The decoration recognized special achievements in military sports. Three examinations had to be passed, including a swimming test, small-caliber shooting, a qualification certificate in command leadership, map reading and distance estimation, completion of the combat course and hand grenade throwing for distance. Men had to be at least 18 years old. Under 35 years of age, permission to wear was granted for 5 years, after which the main examination had to be repeated. The Wehrsportkreuz was awarded with a decorative certificate. It bore the facsimile signatures of the 1st and 2nd Bundesführers Franz Seldte and Theodor Duesterberg as well as the facsimile signature of Bundessportwart However.
