Reserve Infantry Regiment No. 31 was mobilized on August 2, 1914, according to the mobilization plan. In addition to the regiment deploying to the field, a replacement battalion and a recruit depot were established. The regiment was formed with the regimental staff, I. and II. Battalion, as well as the machine gun company in Altona. The III. Battalion was formed in Bremerhaven. The battalions consisted of 4 infantry companies. A telephone section of 4 squads was established with the II. Battalion. The machine gun company consisted of 6 machine guns and was subordinated to the II. Battalion. The regiment was subordinated to the 34th Reserve Infantry Brigade, which was subordinated to the 18th Reserve Division, which in turn was subordinated to the IX. Army Corps.
