The Order of Azad Hind is a distinctive decoration among Wehrmacht awards. It was established in 1942 by Subhas Chandra Bose, leader of the Indian Freedom Movement, for soldiers of Infantry Regiment 950 (the Indian Legion) of the German Wehrmacht.
The Indian Legion was formed from Indian prisoners of war. In December 1942, the Legion reached a troop strength of approximately 3,500 soldiers. As part of the Wehrmacht, the troops were first deployed in Holland and subsequently in France for the defense of the Atlantic Wall. In August 1944, the unit was placed under the Waffen-SS. In March 1945, the Legion was captured and taken to India as prisoners.
The order was established in 3 classes and awarded both with and without swords. The 1st Class was a neck cross, the 2nd Class a breast star, and the 3rd Class a cross on ribbon. Simultaneously, the medal was also established in 3 classes (Gold, Silver, Bronze). The award with swords was only conferred for exceptional service under enemy action.
