Württemberg

Private purchase item circa 1915. The tunic made of field-gray cloth with two side pockets, reseda green turn-down collar and simple cuff patches, two rows of buttons with six buttons each, slightly toned. The cuff patches, button panel and collar with red piping, on the collar the red patches. Sewn onto the shoulders the Prussian shoulder boards for Lieutenant, each with the “flaming grenade,” the unit number «68» and the red cloth underlays. Sewn into the buttonhole the ribbon for the Iron Cross 1914 2nd Class. Interior with field-gray cloth lining. Only lightly worn, condition 2.

Garrison Ludwigsburg, chamber piece (!) 1907/11. The tunic made of dark blue cloth with red standing collar and red cuff flaps with red patches with blue piping, single row of brass buttons, sewn onto the shoulders the red shoulder straps with regimental number “121” embroidered in yellow. Interior with white linen lining with chamber stamp “B.A.XIII”, “1907”, “4B”, “1911”, next to it the size specifications, above it handwritten “Karl Bauer II. Ersatz [...]”, sewn label at bottom “Eber R. Ziegler Zerweck”. The collar repaired during the war with substitute material in gray cloth. Lightly worn, beautifully preserved. Condition 2.

This chamber piece was still worn in a replacement battalion during World War I!

Garrison Ludwigsburg. Personal property item circa 1910. The tunic of blue cloth with white standing collar, white “Swedish” cuffs and white piping, the collar and cuffs with white guard lace, one row of six brass buttons, sewn onto the shoulders the white shoulder straps with the cipher “O” embroidered in red, on the collar and cuffs the gold NCO braid, on the collar the rank buttons for sergeant, on the right sleeve the proficiency badge for good lance fencing. Interior with blue silk lining. Lightly worn, few small repair spots. Condition 2.

Stationed in Ludwigsburg. Private purchase item circa 1910. The ulanka made of fine dark blue cloth with yellow standing collar, cuff slashes and piping, nickel-plated buttons. On the shoulders the epaulettes for the Rittmeister with the regimental cipher “WI”. On the right chest two loops for orders/decorations. Interior with black silk lining, in the neck area label of the maker from Stuttgart. With the accompanying yellow parade plastron with fine linen lining. Complete with the dark blue cloth trousers with yellow piping. Condition 2.

Garrison Cannstatt, circa 1910. Elegant leather helmet, complete with all fittings in silver-plated finish. The helmet plate silver-plated with polished edges, applied star of the Order of Merit of the Württemberg Crown, the center finely enameled, the enamel chipped due to wear. Silver crosspiece fitting with parade spike with black parade plume of buffalo hair, gilt star screws. Gilt domed scale chains on silver rosettes, complete with both cockades. Interior brown sweat leather, honey-colored silk lining. Size 55. Front visor lined in green on the interior, rear visor in red. Condition 2.

Garrison Ludwigsburg, 1912. Frock coat of light blue cloth with high white standing collar and white piping, two rows of six tombac buttons each, sewn onto the shoulders are the shoulder straps for a first lieutenant in the regiment, each bearing the cipher “O”. Interior lined with white and steel-blue silk, on the back the tailor's label “Bender & Cie. Königliche Hoflieferanten, Stuttgart”, in the interior pocket the label “Bender & Co Königliche Hoflieferanten Stuttgart Herr An. Herm. Woith ... Den 3.8.1912.”. Condition 2.

The name entry on the label contains a misspelling, whereby “Boith” became “Woith”. Lieutenant Hermann Boith is recorded in the 1912 Rangliste for Dragoon Regiment No. 25 as a lieutenant of the reserve. He was apparently later promoted to first lieutenant.

Location Stuttgart. Circa 1910. The tunic of dark blue cloth with red standing collar and cuffs, the button panel with red piping, a single row of eight tombac buttons, the collar and cuffs with guard lace in silver officer's embroidery, on the shoulders the shoulder boards for Oberleutnant with the regimental cipher “O”. Interior with black silk lining, in the neck area tailor's label from Stuttgart, in the skirt the initials “FS 4.”. Condition 2.

Circa 1910. Leather helmet, complete with all fittings in nickel silver. Front plate in non-ferrous metal with frosted silver finish, at center the partially enameled coat of arms of Stuttgart, below banderole “Gott zur Ehr dem Nächsten zur Wehr” (To Honor God, To Defend One's Neighbor). Flat scale chin chains attached to rosettes, both cockades present, spike base with gilt star screws, spike with ball finial, removable by screw thread. Interior with brown sweatband and yellow silk lining, front visor lined in green and rear visor lined in red. Size approximately 53. Condition 2.

Garrison Ludwigsburg. Chamber piece circa 1880. Heavy black lacquered leather shako, complete with all fittings. Front bears the Württemberg emblem. Leather chin strap on iron screws, these modernly replaced (!), the strap itself original. Pre-1897, still without Reich cockade. Complete with the field insignia. The split lining inside cut off (!), the crown and body with illegible stamps, the neck visor with size “53 1/2”. Worn, condition 2-3.

The shako was worn in this form by the Train from 1871 to 1894 (introduction of the Knopf 91). Only in 1903 were enlisted men converted to the Pickelhaube.

Home garrison Ulm. Chamber piece 1915. Long trousers of white linen with zinc buttons. With watch pocket. Interior with chamber stamp “B.A.... 1915 P.B. 13.”. Condition 2.

For the “old uniform” until 1900. Helmet made of sheet steel as for cuirassiers, complete with all fittings. Front features the Württemberg emblem, domed scale chains on rosettes, both cockades in the large version. The spike is removable. The front visor with the typical horizontal ridge. The interior lining is missing (!). Cleaned, with old, sealed double holes, the metal washers for the scale chains renewed, the scale chains themselves original, the bell with a dent and a crack at the ridge in the rear. Condition 3.

This is an older helmet Model 1867, which was probably procured in Preußen for the Württemberg staff orderlies and fitted with the Württemberg emblem. The helmet continued to be worn until after 1897 (introduction of the Reich cockade) (in Preußen a new model was introduced in 1889).

The helmet following the pattern for cuirassiers was still worn with the old green-blue uniform. From 1900, the uniform following the model of the mounted rifles was introduced for staff orderlies.

Location Ludwigsburg. Circa 1910. Leather helmet, complete with all fittings in nickel silver and silver-plated finish. Front features the Württemberg emblem with applied gilt reserve cross. Gently curved gilt chin scales on silver rosettes, both cockades present. Crown plate with gilt star screws. The spike is removable. Squared front visor. Interior with brown leather sweatband, lining missing (!), front visor lined in green and rear visor lined in red. Size approximately 56. Front visor somewhat shrunk, loose. Condition 2-.

Circa 1914. Leather helmet, complete with all fittings in nickel silver. Front features the small emblem with the motto “Gott zur Ehr dem nächsten zur Wehr” (To God's honor, to the neighbor's defense), surmounted by the gilt coat of arms of the Kingdom of Württemberg. Flat scale chin chains on gilt rosettes, on the right the state cockade. Cross-shaped top mount with gilt star screws, the spike removable via threading, with decorative ball. Interior with brown leather sweatband and light gray grosgrain lining, the front visor lined in green and the rear visor in red. Size approximately 56. The lining shows wear from use. Condition 2.

Circa 1910. Leather spiked helmet, complete with all fittings. Front plate with Württemberg emblem, flat scale chin chains on button 91, both cockades present, spike removable, neck guard in officer-style without ventilation slide. Interior with brown leather sweatband and reddish-brown silk lining, front visor lined in green and rear visor lined in red as typical for officers. Size approximately 58. Condition 2.

Circa 1910. Leather helmet, complete with all fittings in gilt finish. Front plate featuring the Württemberg emblem in fine officer quality with polished edges and pierced crown work. Flat scale chin chains on rosettes, with both cockades. Cross-shaped base with star screws and removable spike. Interior with finely laced leather lining, front visor lined in green, rear neck guard unlined, inside the bell maker's label “Karl Negele Fabrication & Lager von sämmtlichen Militäreffecten chemische Handschuhwascherei Tübingen”, handwritten size “56”. The bell interior with old factory holes (probably intended for a customs officer, but never used). Condition 2.

The 10th Württemberg Infantry Regiment No. 180 was stationed in Tübingen.

Front with small frost-silvered emblem, in the center the partially enameled coat of arms of Stuttgart, below banderole “Gott zur Ehr dem Nächsten zur Wehr” (To God's honor, to the neighbor's defense). Flat chin scales attached to rosettes, both cockades, cross-shaped base with gilt star screws, the spike with ball finial, removable by screw thread. Interior with reinforced leather lining. Size approximately 56. Condition 2.

Garrison Ulm. Private purchase item circa 1913. The visor cap made of dark blue cloth with red band and piping, black lacquered visor, both cockades present. Interior with brown sweatband and beige oilcloth lining with maker “Wilhelm Bauer …. Ulm a.d.D.”, adjacent stamp “Maschinen-Gewehr-Kompagnie Grenadier-Regiment König Karl (5. Württ.) No. 123”, below the maker remnants of a removed label “.... r. 123.”. Size 54. Condition 2.

In the years 1911 and 1913, over 100 machine gun companies each were established. By the outbreak of war, every active regiment had at least one machine gun company.

Circa 1910. The visor cap made of dark blue cloth with black band and three red piping, black lacquered visor, both cockades present. Interior with brown sweatband and light brown oilcloth lining with maker “Johann Atz Ludwigsburg”. Size 55. Condition 2.

The Field Artillery Regiment Prinz-Regent Luitpold von Bayern (2. Württembergisches) Nr. 29 was stationed in Ludwigsburg.

Station Ulm. Circa 1910. Leather helmet, complete with all fittings in gilt finish. Front emblem featuring the finely gilt Württemberg coat of arms with applied silver reserve cross, flat scale chains on rosettes, both cockades. Cruciform base with smooth socket containing black buffalo hair plume. Interior with brown leather sweatband and gray silk lining, the front visor lined in green and the rear visor in red, size “56 1/2” in the bell. Condition 2.

This helmet could also be worn in Train-Abteilung Nr. 13 (Ludwigsburg).

Garrisoned at Ludwigsburg, circa 1910. Private purchase item. Blue Tellermütze with yellow cap band and piping, with both cockades. Interior with brown sweatband and light brown lining with printed maker “Uniformmützen Militaireffecten Joh. Eltz”. Size approximately 50. Lightly worn. Condition 2.

Stationed at Ulm. Private purchase circa 1910. The stone-gray overcoat made of fine cloth, with dark blue stand-and-fall collar lined with black velvet with red piping, simple sewn cuff slashes, two rows of six silver-plated buttons each, two diagonal side pockets, shoulder straps sewn onto the shoulders for a First Lieutenant with unit number “13”. Interior with fine light gray cloth lining. Condition 2.

Location Stuttgart. Property piece 1913. Dark blue tunic with red standing collar and red “Brandenburg” cuffs, the flaps with blue piping, tombac buttons, on the shoulders the shoulder boards for captain in the regiment with two rank stars each and gilt steep-edged insignia, the Imperial Crown with the initials “FR”, on the left chest seven loops for orders/decorations. Interior with dove-gray and black silk lining, in the breast pocket the tailor's label “Gustav Feeser Strassburg i.E. Saarburg i.L. Herr Oberltnt. Schimpf 3. 3. 1913”. The collar stained, a small damage on the chest panel, two moth holes on the back, the lining damaged at lower right. Condition 2-.

Garrison Ludwigsburg, circa 1910. Dark blue tunic with black stand-up collar and cuff flaps, the breast pocket piping, cuff flaps and stand-up collar with red piping, brass buttons, sewn onto the shoulders the red shoulder straps with the regimental number “29” embroidered in yellow (the cipher “L” with the flaming grenade was not awarded to the regiment until 1913). Interior with black silk lining. Condition 2.

Circa 1915/16. This very light czapka is made entirely of field-gray cloth, internally reinforced with a metal cross-piece and two metal rods for stabilization, originally made without front plate insignia, curved scale chin chains, the rosettes and cockade on the right side covered with field-gray cloth, the detachable square top also made of field-gray cloth, bearing the officer's field insignia in field-gray finish (!). Interior with brown sweatband marked “DRGM”, with attached museum or collection label “No 30 UL20 feldgr. Tschapka (ohne Leder v. Frau v. Bülow-Dätzingen April 39 Geschenk). Estimated size 56. Condition 2+.
Extremely rare! Offered for the first time by us, and we are not aware of any other example!

Bernhard-Friedrich von Bülow entered the Ulanen-Regiment König Wilhelm (2. Württembergisches) Nr. 20 (garrison Ludwigsburg), also known as the “Yellow Uhlans,” as an ensign in 1902. From 1913 he attended the War Academy and during World War I served on the staff of the 26. Reserve-Division. He was later transferred to the “Großen Generalstab” (Great General Staff). After the war, he assumed leadership of the regimental association. He died in 1937 in Dätzingen. In 1939, his wife donated this czapka to a collection. He would have worn this during his time with the Great General Staff in the uniform of an uhlan officer.
