Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg Saber for Officers of Dragoon Regiments 17 and 18

Circa 1880/90. Slightly curved blade with double fullers at the center, etched on both sides with floral motifs and trophies, the obverse showing the Mecklenburg coat of arms, the maker “W.K&C” on the false edge, the supplier “Waarenhaus für Armee & Marine in Berlin” on the blade spine, nickel plating only slightly aged, edge slightly nicked, blade slightly bent toward the point. Three-bar steel hilt with faceted pommel cap, shagreen grip with intact wire binding, knuckle bow intact. Nickel-plated steel scabbard with two suspension rings, the upper ring with fixed carrying eye, the lower carrying ring with eye broken off, scabbard dented toward the point. Condition 2.

Mecklenburg Lion-Head Saber from the Personal Property of Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin

This is a luxury manufacture circa 1910, worn as General of Cavalry and Chief of his 1st Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Dragoon Regiment No. 17, Ludwigslust. Heavy hilt furniture of fire-gilded brass, hand-chased. The pommel features a lion head, the knuckle bow with crossed sabers and acanthus leaves, on the guard shell crossed cavalry sabers with oak leaf wreath, overlaid in silver with the regimental cipher “FF III”, which were simultaneously his father's initials. Original shagreen grip with intact silver wire wrap. The bright steel blade without fuller, double-fullered, on the reverse both sides etched and gilded with the crowned coat of arms of Mecklenburg in laurel wreath with vine decoration, on the obverse marked “Eisenhauer”, on the blade spine marked “J. F. Bock Hoflieferant Berlin”. Blued steel scabbard with 1 carrying ring. Overall length 103 cm. Only lightly worn in exceptionally fine condition.

Important saber of a German sovereign, a unique piece of outstanding quality and preservation, of museum significance.


Friedrich Franz IV, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg [-Schwerin] (born April 9, 1882 in Palermo; died November 17, 1945 in Flensburg) was the last Grand Duke of the territorial division Mecklenburg-Schwerin and last reigning monarch in Mecklenburg. He reigned from the death of his father in 1897 (until 1901 under the guardianship of his uncle Duke Johann Albrecht) until November 14, 1918. In World War I, despite his rank as General of Cavalry, he did not hold active troop command. As sovereign, he visited Mecklenburg troops on the Western Front.

Mecklenburg Schwerin Steel Tube Lance Model 1893 for Troopers of the 2nd Grand Ducal Mecklenburg Dragoon Regiment Nr. 18

Garrison location Parchim. Chamber piece 1910. The lance consisting of a blued steel tubular shaft with iron quadrangular point and iron lance shoe, below the point the four brass eyelets for attachment of the lance pennant, complete with the Mecklenburg lance pennant for non-commissioned officers as chamber piece, stamped “B.A.I.” and with the manufacturer's mark with the year “1917”, the lance centrally fitted with hemp fabric cover, attached to it the rarely preserved lance arm strap, the point and shoe with the unit stamp “18. D. 1. 36.”, the point with the acceptance mark “⚔W10”, various inspection stamps. Length approx. 320 cm. Condition 2.

Mecklenburg-Schwerin Heavy Saber in Deluxe Execution for a Noble Officer in Dragoon Regiment 17 or 18

Circa 1860/70. Full-length fuller blade approximately 3 cm wide and 85.7 cm long with Schör, the ricasso above the false edge etched and gilded on both sides, circumferentially with quality guarantee “Eisenhauer Damaststahl garantirt” as well as the manufacturer “W. Schmalz & Comp. in Solingen”, on the obverse side the gilded coat of arms of a noble family. Solid gilded brass hilt with three bars, the pommel cap florally faceted, with applied crowned cipher “C”; shagreen grip with complete wire wrap, slightly loosened, intact finger loop. Bright steel scabbard with two ring bands and movable suspension rings, the drag with manufacturer “W S & C”, the scabbard spotted and somewhat fly-specked with rust. Condition 2.

Overall length 103.5 cm.

This is a luxurious weapon that was carried during the Franco-Prussian War period. The quality of the weapon suggests that it was carried by a high-ranking personality in the officer corps of the two Dragoon regiments, or even originates from the circle of the Grand Ducal house.
