Lippe-Detmold Gala/Court Uniform from the Personal Estate of Prince Leopold IV (1871-1949)
Circa 1900. This complete ensemble represents an incredible historical treasure. Only one other gala uniform from the House of Lippe exists in this completeness, displayed in the princely museum.
The ensemble consists of the following pieces:
Bicorne. Black needle felt with silver agraffe, silver-plated button with ruler's monogram “E” beneath the crown (Ernst of Lippe-Biesterfeld, 1842-1904), large pleated cockade in red/white colors. Interior with light silk lining. In original box.
Gala Tunic. Dark green fine cloth with red collar, cuffs, and piping. Sleeves and collar with heavy silver embroidery, oak leaves and Lippe roses, on the left breast the loops for orders and decorations. The silver-plated buttons again decorated with crowned “E”. Interior with black silk lining. Included is the original black silk collar. Measurements: shoulder width approx. 40 cm, chest circumference approx. 80 cm, sleeve length approx. 64 cm.
Gala Trousers. Long black cloth trousers with 10.7 cm wide red stripe, overlaid with 2.2 cm wide silver braid. Measurements: waist circumference approx. 108 cm, inseam approx. 112 cm.
Aiguillette with Lanyard. Silver shoulder cord with red weave, with red backing and loops, with hook, affixed crown and cipher “E”, silver buttons with crown “E” decoration, the lanyard with silver acorns and movable silver crowns. In original box, with inscription “Fangschnur und Achselstücke der Hausuniform vom herzogl. Regenten”.
Large Epaulettes. The fields of silver basket-weave cloth, with embroidered red Lippe rose, the crescents in silver bullion, the silver lace with red weave, rigid silver bullion, green cloth backing. The cloth backing with losses. Complete in old original case.
Sword Belt. Waist belt of fine red leather, with wide silver lace with red weave, fittings silver-plated, fine green velvet backing. Accompanying the special matching sword knot. The saber #294777 could also have been worn with this, though it was handed down to us from a different context.
Additionally, a very fine studio photograph of the Prince from the photo studio “Photo-Craym” from 1900. The photograph is signed by the Prince himself and shows him in precisely this gala uniform. Clearly visible are the collar decoration, shoulder pieces, and buttons. On the reverse, the Prince himself left a handwritten dedication: “Als kleines Zeichen der Dankbarkeit für die so reizenden Knöpfchen, mit denen Du mir, liebstes Mutterchen, eine so große und herzliche Freude bescheret hast! – Stets in trauter Liebe u. Anhänglichkeit – Detmold, Dezember 1900 – Dein Leopold”.
All parts in good state of preservation with only minimal signs of use and aging. Condition 2+.
