Mecklenburg-Schwerin Helmet Model 1847 for Enlisted Men of the Grenadier-Garde-Bataillon
circa 1850. Heavy leather helmet, complete with all fittings in gilt tombac. Front features the gilt “sunburst” with applied Mecklenburg coat of arms above bandeau “Grenadier-Garde”. Domed scale chains, the rosettes with flaming grenades, on the right the large state cockade in lacquered metal. Large crosspiece with the distinctive spike base and screwed-on crown, the crosspiece with ball-head screws. The squared front visor and curved rear neck guard edged with metal rails. Inside, the old sweatband leather was cut out but replaced in period. The front visor and neck guard not lined inside. Only lightly worn in exceptionally fine condition. Extremely rare. In over 30 years, this is the first enlisted man's helmet of the Grenadier-Garde that we have been able to offer.
In 1863, the Grenadier-Garde Bataillon was reorganized into the 1st Infantry Regiment. The old helmets were transferred to the Mecklenburg Gendarmerie and accordingly modified with the Mecklenburg onion-shaped spike and a shield reading “Gendarmerie” beneath the coat of arms. Therefore, virtually no helmets of the Grenadier-Garde-Bataillon have survived.
