Italy World War II RSI from 1943: Badge for Paratrooper Frogmen of the "Xa Flottiglia MAS"

circa 1943. The badge made of fine zinc, toned, height 60 mm, partially semi-hollow on reverse, with vertical pin fastener. Worn condition, Condition 2. Very rare.

The badge was worn only for a short time by members of the Xa Mas and was very quickly replaced by the well-known sleeve shield. Extremely rare, only a few original pieces known.

The Decima Flottiglia MAS (English: Tenth MAS Flotilla) was a special forces unit of the Italian Navy in World War II.

The abbreviation MAS normally stood in the Navy for Motoscafo Armato Silurante, a torpedo-armed motorboat type that was deployed with various MAS flotillas. However, 10ª Flottiglia MAS was a cover name, since the unit was primarily equipped with explosive boats and manned torpedoes. In this case, MAS also stood for mezzi d’assalto or small battle craft.

After the Armistice of Cassibile and the subsequent occupation of Italy by German troops, a traumatic split of the flotilla occurred in September 1943. In the Italian Social Republic under German protection, a large formation designated Xª Flottiglia MAS under Junio Valerio Borghese continued to fight alongside the Wehrmacht until the end of the war. Borghese concluded an agreement with German authorities that granted the Xª MAS considerable autonomy under German supreme command. Over the following months, the formerly small special unit grew into a large formation of approximately 18,000 men that operated almost exclusively on land. It consisted of 14 infantry battalions, three artillery detachments, one engineer battalion, and several smaller support units. In addition, there were the remaining special forces, whose above- and underwater units were stationed in La Spezia and Genua.

Italy World War II Submarine Service: Small Estate of a Sailor and Crew Member of the Submarine “Galvani”

Croce al merito di guerra (War Merit Cross), reverse “Merito di Guerra”, bronze, on ribbon with two white stripes for awards from 10.3.1918 onward.
Wearable commemorative medal for crew members of the submarine “Galvani”, obverse with depiction of crown above submarine, reverse “R. Sommergibile L. Galvani Anno XVII” with fasces, complete on original ribbon. Includes a photograph of the sailor and a photograph of the submarine half-submerged.

The “Galvani” was a modern submarine of the Brin-class. At the outbreak of World War II, she was stationed in the Red Sea, based at Massaua, Eritrea. Her career was short and unfortunate, as she was lost on her first patrol.

Under the command of Lieutenant Commander Renato Spano, the Galvani departed Massaua on June 10, 1940, with orders to patrol the entrance to the Gulf of Oman to attack British tankers transporting oil from the Persian Gulf. She reached her patrol area on June 23. The British corvette H.M.S. Falmouth and the destroyer H.M.S. Kimberly were already on anti-submarine patrol in the operational area. The Galvani was discovered by the Falmouth only hours after reaching her patrol area, while running surfaced in darkness. At 23:08 hours, the Falmouth opened fire with her guns from a range of a few hundred meters; Lieutenant Commander Spano ordered a crash dive, but before she could submerge, the Galvani was hit twice in the conning tower and once in the hull, in the aft torpedo room.  Of the crew of seven officers and fifty enlisted men, thirty-one were rescued by the Falmouth.
