World War I Stirnpanzer (Brow Plate) for Stahlhelm M 1916

Manufactured from cast steel, weight 2.5 kg, the original field-gray finish still very well preserved, complete with the original two-piece leather attachment strap (!). Condition 2.

Very rare in this excellent state of preservation! The brow plate, manufactured in only one size, fit all 4 sizes of the Stahlhelm 1916/18. For the smaller helmets, a metal washer had to be placed underneath at the bolts.

The neck guard with handwritten owner's name and unit “Hube - JgRgt 3 - Schschkp”. Below in red script “[...]3./3. K.W. Schn.Sch.Kp. No.III”. Without chinstrap. Condition 2.

Extremely rare! This is the first steel helmet with connection to the Alpenkorps that we have been able to offer!

The Jäger-Regiment subordinate to the Alpen-Korps was formed in 1915. It absorbed the previous Schneeschuh-Bataillone.

Between 1917 and 1918, more than one million men of the American Expeditionary Forces fought on the Western Front. The majority in the Verdun sector.

Circa 1917/18. The first steel helmet with approximately 80% of its olive green paint finish preserved, the shell lightly surface rusted. Interior with sheet metal ring from 1917 onwards, two segments of the three-piece liner retained, the pads without filling, one segment with the owner’s name “Schäfer”, side stamped with manufacturer “Si.66” (Eisenhütte Silesia, Paruschowitz Upper Silesia), stamped “Bi 329” inside the shell, with original chinstrap.
The second steel helmet with approximately 80% of its olive green paint finish preserved, the shell lightly surface rusted. The liner and one rivet are missing, side stamped with manufacturer “Si.66” (Eisenhütte Silesia, Paruschowitz Upper Silesia), stamped “Bi 651” inside the shell. On the left side with approximately four bullet entry holes, on the right side with one exit hole.

A testament to the horrors of war! The helmets came together from the estate of one and the same World War veteran. The helmet with the bullet holes was placed as a “dummy” on the trench parapet and thus fulfilled its purpose as a “lifesaver”.

The symbol is likely a non-regulation unit marking. Possibly for a Freikorps or home guard unit during the crisis period of the Weimar Republic 1919/20. The paint appears to be winter camouflage.
