Hamburg Banner of the “Landsmannschaft der Sachsen zu Hamburg, Altona und Umgebung”

The banner made of green fabric, bordered by two silver cords, the left one slightly loosened, with silver fringe at the lower end and three silver tassels, the banner cloth with multi-colored metallic thread embroidery, upper left the crowned cipher “A” (for King Albert) and the crowned cipher “G” (for King Georg). In the center the crowned Saxon coat of arms, flanked by two lions with the motto “Providentiae Memor”, the inscription “Gegr. 1899 - Landsmannschaft der Sachsen zu Hamburg, Altona und Umgebung - Bannerweihe 8. Nov. 1903”. The crowns decorated with sequins and jewels, partially loose or missing. The reverse side of white silk, embroidered in green “Glück auf ihr Sachsenbrüder”, bordered by the names of several Saxon cities, the silk slightly worn. Complete with the wooden suspension device. Overall condition good. Condition 2.


The “Landsmannschaft der Sachsen zu Hamburg, Altona und Umgebung” was an association of Saxon students who had joined together in “foreign lands”. The banner is likely a unique piece.

Hamburg Portrait of Hamburg Consul in Cape Town Maximilian Thalwitzer, 1862

Partially gilt daguerreotype, in small case (approx. 8 x 9.5 x 1.6 cm), the portrait showing subject in uniform of the Hamburg Admiralty in finely chased gilt frame, the opposite side lined with green velvet, on the underside of the case a label with handwritten provenance notation “Maximilian Thalwitzer Consul in Kapstadt. Geschenk v. Letty Proctor an meinen Vater 26. Mai 1862. - Dem Archiv v. K. Thalwitzer Woerlitz, 28. Aug. 1904”. The case with minor damage, otherwise very well preserved. Condition 2.

Maximilian Thalwitzer served as Consul of the City of Hamburg in Cape Town from 1838-1855.

Daguerreotype refers to a photographic process of the 19th century (colloquially abbreviated as “dago” in collector's jargon). It is named after the French painter Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre, who developed it between 1835 and 1839.

Hamburg Plaque for the “Old” Finials of the Infantry Regiment Hamburg (2nd Hanseatic) No. 76 from the Franco-Prussian War Period

Hamburg 1875. Shield-shaped plaque with the inscription “Dem Offz. Corps des 2 Hans. Inf. Regts. No 76 zur Anbrg. der bis 1871 auf sein Fahnen getrag. Spitzen gewidmet vom Sec. Lieutenant v. Alt-Stutterheim 29/3 1875.” Height 7.2 cm. Three drill holes for mounting. Condition 2.

A piece of museum significance:

Von Alt-Stutterheim is listed in the Rank and Quarters List of 1875. He was a veteran of the Franco-Prussian War and recipient of the Iron Cross 1870 2nd Class. The regiment fought among other engagements at the Siege of Metz, the Battle of Loigny, Orléans, Le Mans, and at Paris.

“After the Franco-Prussian War, the colors received by A. K. O. of June 16, 1871 the Iron Cross for their finials as well as black-white color streamers. The old finials remained with the respective unit. Cover caps with cross and monogram were received by the colors on April 13, 1872. The consecration of the musketeer battalion colors took place on May 20, 1872 in the Reformed Church in Hamburg. The color of the Fusilier Battalion, which was damaged in the engagements on December 2 and 4, 1870, was brought to Berlin on May 23 and there presented to the Kaiser. He decreed that the color should receive a new finial with the Iron Cross and beneath the finial a silver ring with the engraving 'Loigny (Orleans) December 2, 1870.' The consecration of this color took place on June 30, 1872 in the Lübeck Garrison Church.”
