ZR-1 “USS Shenandoah” was the first rigid airship to obtain its lift from helium as lifting gas. At the same time, it was the first of three rigid airships built in the USA in the 20th century. It dominated the airship scene at Naval Air Station Lakehurst from 1923 to 1925. As the first American large airship, it was originally intended to be the cornerstone for an American airship industry. The designation ZR stood for steerable rigid airships in the US Navy from 1920 onwards. On September 3, 1925, the airship encountered severe turbulence, broke apart, and crashed near Ava, Ohio. 14 crew members perished in the crash.
