NSDAP Visor Cap Cockade for Political Leaders 1st Model
The NSDAP Visor Cap Cockade for Political Leaders, 1st Model from around 1933/34 represents a significant insignia from the early phase of the National Socialist regime in Germany. This cockade was worn as a headgear badge by the Political Leaders of the NSDAP and marks an important transitional period in the uniforming of the party organization.
After the seizure of power in January 1933, the NSDAP systematically began to consolidate its organizational structures and equip the various party formations with uniform clothing and insignia. The Political Leaders formed the backbone of the party organization and were responsible for administrative and ideological leadership at all levels – from the Reich leadership down to the local cells and blocks.
The 1st Model of the visor cap cockade for Political Leaders was used during 1933 and 1934 and differed in its execution from later variants. These early cockades typically displayed the characteristic design of NSDAP sovereignty emblems: a silver-colored or white metal eagle with outstretched wings, holding a swastika in its talons, surrounded by an oak leaf wreath. The cockade was attached to the front of the visor cap and served as a clear identification mark of party membership and rank.
The uniforming of Political Leaders was still subject to various changes and standardizations during this early phase. The Reichszeugmeisterei (Reich Equipment Office) of the NSDAP, responsible for the production and distribution of party equipment, gradually developed more precise regulations for uniform and insignia design. The 1st Model cockade was therefore only used for a relatively short period before being replaced by revised and standardized versions.
The production of these cockades was carried out by various private manufacturers authorized by the Reichszeugmeisterei. Quality and exact details could therefore vary slightly, although the basic design elements had to remain uniform. The cockades were usually made from aluminum or zinc die-cast and subsequently silver-plated or finished in white metal.
In the hierarchical structure of the NSDAP, the Political Leaders held central importance. They were divided into various ranks, from Blockleiter (Block Leader) and Zellenleiter (Cell Leader) at the lowest level, through Ortsgruppenleiter (Local Group Leader), Kreisleiter (District Leader), and Gauleiter (Regional Leader) up to the Reich Leadership. Each of these ranks had specific uniform regulations, with the visor cap cockade representing a mandatory element.
The years 1933/34 marked a phase of intense organizational transformation in Germany. After the consolidation of power by the NSDAP, party structures were massively expanded. The number of Political Leaders grew rapidly as the regime attempted to penetrate all areas of public and private life. The uniform parts and insignia from this period reflect this expansion phase and the efforts to achieve a uniform visual representation of the party.
From a collecting perspective, objects of the 1st Model are rarer today than later versions, as they were only produced and used for a limited period. The indicated Condition 2 suggests a well-preserved specimen, possibly showing slight signs of use or minimal aging, but overall still in very good condition.
These cockades are important contemporary historical documents that provide insight into the organizational structures and visual culture of the NS regime. They document the NSDAP's efforts to create a unified demonstration of power through standardized uniforms and insignia and to make hierarchical structures externally visible. For military-historical and contemporary historical research, such objects form important sources for understanding the mechanisms of rule and the organizational development of the National Socialist regime in its early phase.
