Coburg Badge of Honor 1922-1932

This piece is the 1st Model, manufactured and awarded in 1932. Solid brass-bronze struck and toned. Reverse with thin pin. Worn, with period contemporary repair at upper pin hinge, in good condition 2.
One of the very few originals, extremely rare.

Adolf Hitler traveled on October 14, 1922 in a special train with 650 SA escorts, following an invitation, to the third "German Day" in Coburg. There street fighting and brawls occurred with Communists and Red Front fighters. It was the first violent appearance of the NSDAP outside Munich. In his book Mein Kampf, Hitler particularly highlighted the events as the "March to Coburg" and milestone of the movement. On October 15, 1932, during the Coburg Hitler Days on the occasion of the 10th anniversary, the former participants were decorated with the Coburg Badge of Honor. Thereafter the NSDAP celebrated the events of the "German Day" of 1922 annually.

The Coburg Badge of Honor belonged, along with the German Order, the Blood Order and the Golden Party Badge, to the highest decorations of the NSDAP. In total only 436 "Old Fighters" were decorated with it. Later the party decoration was also awarded honorarily. Until February 1938 there were 418 badge holders, such as for example the former Duke Carl Eduard.

The badge was designed by Louis Walter and modified by Hitler.

The text on the certificate for the award of the party decoration, signed by Adolf Hitler, read:

"The holder of this certificate Party Comrade ... participated in the march in Coburg on October 14/15, 1922. On the occasion of the Ten-Year celebration the Coburg Badge of Honor was awarded to him. Munich, October 1932".

Blood Order Badge of November 9, 1923, so-called “Blutorden”, 2nd Model. Silver medal, reverse with award number “3034” above silver hallmark “800”. Unworn with beautifully preserved patina, with ribbon, condition 2+.
Hermann Schmitz was born on January 1, 1881 in Essen as the son of factory worker Diedrich Schmitz and his wife Luise (née Wöhrmann). He attended the Oberrealschule and began a commercial apprenticeship in 1898 at the “Ahrenbergsche Aktiengesellschaft für Bergbau und Hüttenbetrieb” in Essen. In 1905 Hermann Schmitz attended the commercial school in Frankfurt am Main and after joining the Metallurgische Gesellschaft became advisor to the chairman of the supervisory board Wilhelm Merton, who promoted him considerably. In 1914 he participated in World War I and was wounded; after his recovery he was appointed Reich Commissioner for Chemical Production in the War Raw Materials Department in 1915.

In 1919 Schmitz participated as an expert on nitrates and fertilizers in the peace negotiations at Versailles, where he met Carl Bosch. On July 1, 1919 he joined BASF as his financial advisor and was appointed to the board of directors that same year, where he headed the foreign department and advanced to chief financial officer. He assumed this position for the entire conglomerate after the founding of I.G. Farben in 1925. In the 1920s he was responsible, among other things, for I.G.'s contacts with Standard Oil. As financial and economic advisor to various Weimar governments, he used his influence in favor of I.G.

From 1933 Hermann Schmitz served as a deputy of the NSDAP in the Reichstag. His NSDAP membership number was 26802. In 1935 he succeeded Carl Duisberg as General Director of I.G. after his death. In 1938 he was appointed “Wehrwirtschaftsführer” (Defense Economy Leader). On his 60th birthday he received a portrait from Adolf Hitler with dedication. After the war he was arrested by the U.S. Army and sentenced to 4 years imprisonment for “plunder and spoliation” in the Nuremberg I.G. Farben Trial. After his early release in 1950 he became a member of the supervisory board of Deutsche Bank in Berlin and honorary chairman of the supervisory board of Rheinische Stahlwerke. Hermann Schmitz died on October 8, 1960 in Heidelberg.

Badge of Honor of November 9, 1923 No. 1857

Badge of Honor of November 9, 1923, so-called “Blood Order”, 2nd Model. Silver medal, reverse with award number “1857” above silver hallmark “800”. On original sewn ribbon. Lightly worn with very attractive dark patina, condition 2.
The Blood Order with award number 1857 was awarded to one of the 177 recipients on nomination list No. VII of May 30, 1939. The recipients came primarily from Niederösterreich, Kärnten and Tirol as well as some from the Altreich who were subsequently submitted for award for their prison sentences.

The Badge of Honor of November 9, 1923 was instituted on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the “National Socialist uprising of November 9, 1923” by the Führer of the NSDAP Adolf Hitler. The manner of wearing was regulated by decree on February 11, 1934. The award criteria designated the following eligible recipients:
1. Members of the SA, members of the Bund Reichskriegsflagge and Oberland, which were united in the Deutscher Kampfbund, who participated in the fighting on November 8/9, 1923.
2. Members of the above-mentioned organizations, the police and Wehrmacht, who sided with the putschists and thereby lost their positions or requested dismissal on account of their political stance, regardless of whether they fought or not.
3. Members of the above-mentioned organizations who were set in march for combat operations but did not see action because they were stopped by government forces or failed to reach the deployment location due to force majeure.
The award required uninterrupted membership in the NSDAP before January 30, 1933 or in the SA. On May 30, 1938, the awards that had been suspended on April 1, 1935 were resumed and the circle of recipients was expanded. This included all those imprisoned who had served a prison sentence of at least 1 year in the Weimar Republic for their struggle for the NSDAP movement in Germany and Austria. Of the 1st Model of the Blood Order, only 1,500 awards were made from 1934 to 1935. Of the 2nd Model, pieces with award numbers up to approximately 4300 are known. The official records end with the year 1942. The Blood Order was considered the highest decoration of the NSDAP.
