Hessen-Darmstadt Cartridge Box and Parade Bandolier for Officers of the Grand Ducal Hessian Train Battalion No. 18
Stationed in Darmstadt circa 1900. The body of the cartridge box constructed of sheet steel, covered with black lacquered leather and fitted with brass mounts, sides with rings attached to semi-relief lion heads, the lid of hard leather, black lacquered, mounted with brass frame featuring laurel and oak leaf wreath and the cipher “L” at center. Complete with bandolier. Red morocco leather with gold lace with two red stripes, complete with all fittings, including the two cleaning needles on chains. In original box. Very fine condition. Condition 2.
A very rare and beautiful piece! The two Dragoon regiments carried bandoliers with silver lace. The Hessian artillery and the Train Battalion, however, carried bandoliers with gold lace. The artillery in turn bore crossed cannon barrels on the cartridge box, while the Train Battalion, like the Dragoons, bore the cipher “L”, but not in silver, rather in gold.
