Circa 1860. Copper sheet, silver-plated with maker's mark Georg Schultz Hamburg on reverse. The gilded coat of arms of the city of Hamburg with the motto “United and Free as Our Fathers” affixed, with holes on sides for sewing onto the czapka. Unfortunately the crown above the coat of arms is missing, otherwise condition 2.
Very rare! The Cavalry Corps was approximately the size of a squadron. The corps was served mainly by sons of wealthy citizens who could afford a horse and uniform. The Hamburg Citizen Militia proved itself on various occasions. In 1867 Hamburg joined the North German Confederation. In 1868 the Citizen Militia was dissolved.
