The Warrior's Badge of Honor in Iron was instituted on March 13, 1917, by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen on the occasion of his 25th jubilee. Prussian Order Pour le Mérite

This piece was manufactured in the 1920s/1930s. Gold-plated base metal, struck on one side, the obverse finely enameled. Suspended from a ribbon bar made from an authentic neck ribbon section with applied swords, pin-back mounting on reverse. Some minor enamel damage, condition 2-. Most likely this was a piece for the decoration cushion of a deceased veteran, or an exhibition or display piece from that period.

Secondary pieces from this era appear regularly on the market. Due to daily wear of the awarded crosses, most pieces exhibited more or less significant enamel damage. For this reason, many officers and veterans purchased corresponding secondary pieces to continue wearing them.

Kingdom of Bavaria Military Max Joseph Order: Breast Star of the Grand Cross

This is a particularly fine example crafted by the Bavarian court jeweler Quellhorst, circa 1850. Silver breast star, the applied cross arms and medallion in gold, the center with gold motto “Virtuti Pro Patria”, the background blue enameled, the cross arms with finely granulated silver inlay. The reverse gilt, the medallion bearing the maker's mark “Quellhorst”, the pin with the Austrian import mark for silver goods “A”, from 1872 onwards. Complete in the distinctive octagonal presentation case, exterior covered with brown leather, interior with light gray velvet bed, the lid interior with white silk lining. Only lightly worn, in wonderful condition.
Extremely rare, of museum-quality significance, offered by us for the first time in over 35 years of business.

The Military Order of Max Joseph was established by Bavarian King Maximilian I Joseph by army order of March 1, 1806, retroactive to January 1, 1806, and was the highest military order of merit of the Kingdom of Bavaria. The order consisted of three classes: Grand Cross, Commander's Cross, and Knight's Cross.  Recipients were entered into the nobility register and received the addition “Ritter von” (Knight of) to their civilian name (for example, Wilhelm Leeb became Wilhelm Ritter von Leeb).  The Grand Cross was only awarded to generals; during the period 1816–1876 there were only 11 awards in total, 10 of which went to foreigners.
This piece originates from the estate of Julius Jakob Freiherr von Haynau (* October 14, 1786 in Kassel; † March 14, 1853 in Vienna), General of Artillery (Feldzeugmeister); the award was made in 1849 for the suppression of the uprisings in Hungary. The order remained in the family after the general's death.

Replacement piece, manufactured circa 1935/40. Solid die-struck construction in fine zinc, enameled center attached by clasps, reverse smooth. Worn, cross on crown broken off at top, condition 2-.

Replacement pieces from this period surface regularly. Due to daily wear of badges awarded in World War I, many pieces suffered more or less extensive enamel damage. Cross with sharp-edged arms, with edge inscription “Aus erobertem Geschütz” (From Captured Cannon), on replaced ribbon. Worn condition, Grade 3.

Instituted on December 24, 1813 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III. This medal was instituted together with the medals for 1813 and 1813/14. The medal for 1815 was instituted later on October 30, 1815. This decoration was awarded to those combatants who participated in the War of Liberation against Napoleon in 1813 and actually fought. Prerequisites were faithful service and no criminal offenses or excesses during the fighting. After the death of the recipient, the medals were to be transferred to the responsible parish and name lists compiled. Medals were manufactured with round cross arms (so-called Paris manufacture) and medals with sharp-edged cross arms (so-called Berlin manufacture).

Prussian Flag Finial for Battalion Colors with the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross 1870

The flag finial made of fire-gilded brass bronze, at the center a laurel wreath with riveted Grand Cross in silver frame, blackened iron core. Museum-quality piece with typical age patina, in beautiful untouched original condition. During World War I, the color was still carried in the field and sustained damage.

After the 1870/71 campaign, the Kaiser awarded all Prussian battalion colors that stood “under enemy fire” the new flag finials with the Iron Cross as a decoration. The cross set in the flag finial is identical to the Grand Crosses of the Iron Cross 1870 awarded during the campaign. Very rare and a highly desirable piece for any Iron Cross collector.

The Warrior's Badge of Honor in Iron was instituted on March 13, 1917 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen on the occasion of his 25th anniversary of reign. The badge of honor was awarded approximately 2,000 times to Hessian officers, non-commissioned officers and enlisted men who had previously received the Iron Cross and the Hessian Medal for Bravery and had been wounded at the front. Therefore, the decoration also received the nickname “Bloody Ludwig” among the soldiers.
One of the most famous recipients of this decoration was the German fighter pilot Julius Buckler.

Prussia Non-Wearable Commemorative Medal for the Visit of Kaiser Wilhelm II to the Non-Commissioned Officer School Annaburg on August 3, 1888

Silver medal, diameter 28 mm, obverse featuring the crowned cipher “W”, reverse inscribed “Annaburg den 3. August 1888” within an oak leaf wreath. Complete in original case. Condition 2. The medal was awarded in limited numbers only to the instructors.

In 1877, the Prussian War Ministry established the Non-Commissioned Officer Preparatory Schools. The first preparatory school was established in 1877 in Weilburg. In 1880, Annaburg (Saxony) followed as an expansion of the old military boys' institution located there. The third preparatory school was established in 1888 in Neubreisach. In 1891, a preparatory school was opened in Jülich, alongside the Non-Commissioned Officer School. Additional preparatory schools were established in 1894 in Fürstenfeldbruck in Bavaria, in 1896 in Bartenstein, and in 1897 in Greifenberg. In the Kingdom of Saxony, a preparatory school was established in Marienberg.
The preparatory school students were not military personnel. In contrast to the Non-Commissioned Officer School, where military training was the primary objective, the preparatory school was intended to provide the general intellectual and moral foundation as well as physical fitness required for the future military profession.

After two years of training, students were transferred to the Non-Commissioned Officer School. The Non-Commissioned Officer Preparatory Schools initially had only two companies. Those who came to the Non-Commissioned Officer School as preparatory school students could complete their training after only two years, while the training of non-commissioned officer candidates from the troops lasted three years.

Prussian Order Pour le Mérite

This piece is a blank, circa 1925. The cross made of base metal, struck on both sides, not yet cut out. A remnant piece from an order manufacturing facility. Condition 2. An interesting documentary piece.
Second pieces from this period appear regularly. Due to the daily wearing of the awarded crosses during World War I, most pieces had more or less significant enamel damage. For this reason, many officers who served in the Reichswehr and Wehrmacht after 1918 purchased corresponding second pieces to continue wearing them.

Prussian Order Pour le Mérite, significant cross of Russian manufacture from the Wars of Liberation, 1813-1815.

Gold and enamel, without ribbon. The order's motto and the crowned cipher “F” of the order's founder fired in gold foil. Significant enamel damage, well repaired in period, the eagle in the lower left arm of the cross was restored in period.

The eagles between the arms of the cross in the form of the Russian double-headed eagle, crowned and finely chased.

Very finely crafted example. The execution with crowned double-headed eagles indicates private Russian manufacture. Complete with golden round neck ring and the original worn period neck ribbon. Worn piece with the described wear and age characteristics, condition 2-.

Of the order awards during the Napoleonic Wars under King Friedrich Wilhelm III, a considerable number went to officers of the allied Russian Army.

As can be seen in numerous contemporary portraits, these recipients often had insignia manufactured at private expense, which occasionally deviate significantly from the official form.

Nevertheless, this piece is a typical example from the Wars of Liberation and a significant and highly interesting documentary piece of the Prussian-Russian brotherhood in arms in the fight against Napoleon.
To our knowledge, the only known example with Russian double-headed eagles.

Significant museum-quality piece of the greatest rarity.

This piece is illustrated and described in Karsten Klingbeil/Andreas Thies, Orden 1700-2000, Volume III, pp. 62-63, No. 1515.

The Warrior's Badge of Honor in Iron was instituted on March 13, 1917 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen on the occasion of his 25th anniversary in office. The badge of honor was awarded approximately 2,000 times to Hessian officers, non-commissioned officers, and enlisted men who had previously received the Iron Cross and the Hessian Medal for Bravery and had been wounded at the front. For this reason, the decoration also received the nickname “Bloody Ludwig” among the soldiers. One of the most famous recipients of this decoration was the German fighter pilot Julius Buckler.
