The flavored spirit takes its name from the East Westphalian community of Steinhagen on the southern slope of the Teutoburger Wald. Steinhäger is a juniper-flavored spirit. Characteristic is the elongated bottle made of brown stoneware. The juniper schnapps from the former König distillery in Steinhagen originally also bore the name Steinhäger-Urquell.
