Michael Wilhelm Schneider: Infantryman Perhobstler with Bavarian Divisions in the World War
Militaria Publishing House. Text volume with contemporary black-and-white photographs, 408 pages, sewn binding, dust jacket, 408 pages, format 134 x 214 mm. This reprint of the original text follows the first edition, Berlin 1929.
Ten years after the end of the First World War, novels dealing with the war experience enjoyed a veritable boom. One of the books published at that time was Wilhelm Michael Schneider’s Infantryman Perhobstler. Its subtitle announced the autobiographical account of a soldier’s fate: With Bavarian Divisions in the World War. And indeed, the novel is not a fictional narrative. Research in military history literature and in the Bavarian War Archive showed that the first-person narrator, who calls himself Perhobstler, describes the actual wartime career of the author.
Schneider, a merchant by profession, came from Altrip in the Palatinate, which at that time belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria. In October 1914 he was drafted and after brief training was assigned to the 23rd Bavarian Infantry Regiment in Flanders. Until spring 1917 he fought in the West and was wounded several times. After his promotion to lieutenant of the reserve, he was transferred to the 27th Bavarian Infantry Regiment in Romania. In 1918 the unit was transferred to the West, where Schneider was wounded for the last time in June.
The emotional plausibility of the account, its vivid and lively language, and the documentary quality of the work provide the occasion to reissue this text in the commemorative year 2014. The volume includes numerous photographs and documents from the Bavarian Army Museum, the Bavarian War Archive, and not least from Schneider’s estate.
