Baden WWI Pickelhaube “Field Gray” from the Estate of Lieutenant Alfons von Carlowitz of the 1st Baden Life Grenadier Regiment No. 109
Home garrison Karlsruhe. Personal item circa 1915. Elegant leather helmet nearly of peacetime quality, complete with all fittings in field gray, predominantly non-magnetic material, likely war metal. Front helmet plate features the Baden Griffin with the star of the House Order of Fidelity in field gray or substitute version, the arms of the cross with remnants of the original red paint. Flat scale chin chains on rosettes, both cockades present. The spike base with gilded stars, the spike removable. Interior with brown sweatband and reddish-brown silk grosgrain lining, the front visor lined in green and the neck guard lined in red, inside the bell the owner’s label “Leutnant Alfons von Carlowitz 1. Badisches Leibgrenadier Regiment”, label with handwritten size “57”. Condition 2.
A very fine untouched helmet! Lieutenant von Carlowitz is listed in the Honor Roll of the Former German Army for the 1st Baden Life Grenadier Regiment No. 109 on page 287. He was reported missing in action on July 19, 1918 in the area of Ploisy-Chaudun (Northern France).
