The donor is Naval Senior Assistant Surgeon of the Reserve Dr. Karl Scheele (*20.5.1884). He served until December 1915 as assistant physician on the hospital ship “Sierra Ventana” and thereafter until September 1918 as assistant physician on the battlecruiser “Goeben”.
The passenger ship “Sierra Ventana” was built in 1912 for Norddeutscher Lloyd and was requisitioned by the Imperial Navy as a hospital ship shortly after the outbreak of World War I in August 1914. During 1914 and 1915 it was stationed in the naval base at Wilhelmshaven, where it served as a floating hospital with modern specialized departments providing medical care to wounded soldiers.
Karl Scheele likely acquired the sword as a gift for a Marine Infantry officer before his transfer to Turkey at the end of 1915.

Imperial German Navy Trumpet Banner of the Music Corps of the I. Seebataillon

Kiel garrison, circa 1900. The banner made of white silk. On the obverse, the cipher of the I. Seebataillon, the Imperial Crown with flowing ribbons over crossed anchors above the battalion number “I” in finest hand embroidery executed in gold metallic thread. On the reverse, the crowned coat of arms of the Grand Duke of Baden with grand order decoration and heraldic mantle, in finest hand embroidery with gold and silver threads, in the 4 corners with golden oak leaf sprays. Three sides bordered with golden fringe. Dimensions 49 x 50 cm. The attachment loops for the trumpet are missing at the top. Only slight signs of use and age, in beautiful condition.

Extremely rare, in over 35 years of business this is the 1st trumpet banner of the Imperial Seebataillon that we have been able to offer, we know of no other example.

Friedrich II (born 1857, died 1928) was the last Grand Duke of Baden from 1907 to 1918. In 1905 he was appointed Colonel General with the rank of Field Marshal. As such, he was Chief of the Imperial I. Seebataillon in Kiel. He donated the trumpet banners and the kettledrum covers for the music corps, which is why these are decorated with the Grand Ducal Baden coat of arms.
