German Empire 1871-1918 Pickelhaube for a General of the Schutztruppe

Circa 1914. Elegant, lightweight helmet made of vulcanized fiber in the pattern for generals, complete with all fittings. Front features the Imperial Eagle, gilded with polished edges. Gilt slightly curved scale chains on rosettes. Quatrefoil plate with stars and detachable fluted spike in the special pattern for generals. Angular front visor. The helmet interior with embossed brown leather sweatband and blue-white lining, the shell interior lined with black felt, inside the shell the vignette “Oberkommando der Schutztruppen”, handwritten size 56 1/2. In original case. Condition 2.

Extremely rare!

The helmet was only introduced in 1913 for the generals of the Schutztruppen and replaced the “General's hat”. It corresponds to the Prussian helmet for generals, but features the Imperial Eagle on the front.
The wearer was most certainly Generalmajor Franz Georg von Glasenapp, who held command of the Schutztruppen from October 18, 1908 to April 6, 1914. He was promoted to Generalmajor in 1911. At the time of the introduction of the Pickelhaube for generals of the Schutztruppen in 1913, he was the only active general of the Schutztruppen.

We are delighted to have this very special piece of museum significance in our inventory and to be able to offer it to you!

Imperial Schutztruppe in German East Africa Officer's Hat

Circa 1912. Stone-gray felt hat, right brim folded up, secured on the inside with a snap fastener, hatband and edge trimming in white grosgrain ribbon, affixed to the side with the large Imperial cockade of officer quality. Interior with brown leather sweatband, rear with brown silk grosgrain ribbon, top of crown with manufacturer's imprint “Globus”. Size 58. Only lightly worn, condition 2.

In contrast to the hats of the Schutztruppe for “German Southwest Africa,” the hats from East Africa are only very rarely found.
